Determinative (D) : is a glyph that has no phonetic properties in the word, and is placed at the back of the word, it simply helps you clarify the meaning of the word, like if it's an action, conecpt, abstract idea. This is very important as many words in mdw nTr will have the same hieroglyphics value, but thier definitions are very different and it is up to the determinative to help you distinguish the difference when reading hieroglyphics.
